How We Can Be Assured That God Is In Control
October 2022
It’s common to have doubts in your faith, especially in times where everything seems to be going haywire and it looks like your hands are tied regardless of the effort. Fear and anxiety begin to creep into your heart and it envelopes your mind.
In those times, it’s key to remember that though you may be not, God is in fact, still in control. Your life is in His hands and anything situated in His hands doesn’t Have a bad ending.
Let’s explore this expression more. What does it mean to have God in control of your life? How can understanding this help us stay still when we hit rough patches?
What Does It Mean For God To Be In Control?
Many times we’ve heard or even told someone else “God is in control”. But what does it really mean?
You can be rest assured that it doesn’t mean He is some sort of puppeteer who controls everything we do. It doesn’t also mean that God is responsible for everything that happens to us in life, good or bad.
What it actually means is that God knows what’s going on in our lives, good or bad, and has a plan to make everything work out for our good. He has authority over the entire universe and He sees us, He cares for us and He’s always making sure things work out for us as His children.
The understanding of the sovereignty of God in our lives gives us an anchor in times of trouble.
Does The Bible Say That God Is In Control?
The Bible doesn’t mention the phrase ‘God is in control,’ directly but lets us understand in many ways that He is.
When everything around us starts to fall apart in our hands, we must remember that He is the One who holds it all together. We must allow His Word to prove to us that God has been, is, and will be sovereign over our lives and the world.
Why Should We Allow God To Lead Us?
Every one of us is a rookie on this earth. We’re each figuring life out for the first time. Who better to guide you through that than the One who has lived through millions of lives, is infinite in wisdom, and even gave us the life we have?
We allow God to lead us because He loves us, gave Himself for us, and has our best interests at heart. We can be sure that He will never lead us astray, but our hearts and minds can. Instead of trusting in our own wisdom, banking on God is an option that will never fail because He never fails.
How Do I Let God Be In Control?
There’s a popular phrase that says, “let go and let God“.
But sometimes, we can’t seem to want to relinquish the reins of our lives to God. We instead prefer to keep worrying about everything and trying to figure things out on our own. It’s pretty hard to.
The Bible gives us a solution to this in Philippians 4:6-7,
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
So how do we fully put these priceless nuggets into practice?
- Prayer: Beloved, instead of worrying, the bible gives us the recipe for peace of mind and freedom from anxiety; prayer. Take everything to God in prayer. By doing this, you allow Him to work His full counsel in your life and peace will flood your heart. He wants to carry your burdens so bad.
- Study of His Word: Another one is studying the Word. Read the Bible to know God better, fill your heart with His promises and grow your faith in Him. When you do so, it’ll be easier to truly listen to Him when He speaks.
- Practice the Art of Listening: Listen to God when He speaks. Not just with your ears but with your actions. When He gives instructions to you, it’s important that you obey them out of your abundance of love for Him. It shows that you trust Him and His decisions over your life.
- Give thanks: Gratitude helps us recount the good works of God and increases our trust in Him. It makes it so much easier for us to give Him the wheels of our lives and know that He is in total control.
Bible Verses That Remind Us That God Is In Control.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
This verse will remind you that even problems that seem huge to you, are little to God. His ways are so much better than ours. He knows what is best for us and is working to bring it to pass.
“God is not a man that He should lie nor a son of man that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? Or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good.”
We can be sure by reading this verse that we can depend on God’s promises. So regardless of what goes on around us, He’s still on top of it all and is working it all out for our good.
“In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will.”
God works ALL things, especially everything in our lives according to His will. What is His will? To give us a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11) and to prosper us. He loves us so deeply.
“For the kingdom is the Lord’s: and he is the governor among the nations.”
The authority over everything belongs to the One we call Father, the One who loves us. We can be sure that it hasn’t changed and will never change. He is sovereign.
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
God spoke these words to Joshua, and it still applies to you today. He cannot leave you. He cares about you. We do not walk alone in our difficulties.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
Even when everything is spiraling out of control, the one thing we can anchor our faith and hope on is God.
“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.”
This is a promise. Jerusalem is a natural fortress. It is surrounded by Mount Zion on the north, the Mount of Olives on the east, and other mountains on the other sides.
You can be sure that those mountains will always be there, even till the end of time. In the same way, God is constantly protecting His own, including us. That is where we must draw faith from.
“He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”
God is powerful beyond anything we can think or imagine. If He has such power over seasons, kings, and human knowledge, then He is definitely in control of our lives too.
“The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
What can mere mortals do to me?
The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
I look in triumph on my enemies.”
This verse reassures us that as long as God is with us, He will help us. And as long as He is helping us, we will always triumph over whatever difficulty we encounter.
Final Thoughts
God’s control and authority are subject to our will. It is freedom. He never forces anything on us but waits for us to choose Him every time. That’s how loving and intentional He is about us.
Beloved, in our good times and bad, we must bear in mind that not even a leaf or a sparrow falls to the ground without God knowing about it. In the same way, He knows all we go through, He sees us, cares for us, and is working all things together for our good. God is in control.
